Submissions Now Open

We will be reading submissions for Issue 3 between December 1, 2016 and May 1, 2017. General submission guidelines are set out below. Our 'experimental' submission categories each have their own guidelines.

General Submissions Guidelines: Prose
We are looking for prose (prose poetry, creative nonfiction, or fiction) between 500 and 2500 words. All prose will be illustrated by an illustrator of our choice.

General Submissions Guidelines: Graphic Narratives
We are looking for mini-comics, with words or not, that tell a story. The page dimensions comics should fit within is 4.25 in wide x 6 in tall. All lengths accepted. Please submit comics at 300 dpi and CMYK.

Illustrations
Illustrators interested in joining our team are encouraged to submit their portfolio below. We pay $25 per illustration.

Experimental Submission Categories
Each issue, we will offer 'experimental' submission categories. These submission prompts are chosen personally by each member of our staff.

Publishing Process
Accepted prose and graphic narratives will be published online as they are accepted, and then printed in our biannual issue.

Rights and Payment
Penny pays $25 for each piece of writing and each illustration it publishes, and pays $50 for each graphic narrative. For that, we obtain non-exclusive rights to post online, distribute in print, use in our advertising and use in podcasting. Reprints are perfectly fine to submit, so long as you still hold the rights to the work.

A Note About Payment
We work hard as an all-volunteer staff to make sure we can pay our contributors, and we will continue to do so for as long as we can. Please think of our small payment as a reassurance that we value your art, and not as an indication of how much we think you are worth. Penny is a zine dedicated to experimenting with the forms of illustration and prose, and our low overhead allows us the freedom to be independent from any institution and to remain fluid as a tool of discovery into what can be accomplished and expressed.

Thank you!
